WOOOT summer!

So I can OFFICIALLY say that summer has begun. That darned logbook is over and done with...all I need to do is get it bound and hand it in.

Im in the middle of packing my luggage that shall be my wardrobe for the next 6weeks...its a pretty dauting task especially since I should be on a budget so do not wana go shopping every weekend for a new outfit kind of thing. Also I have this unexplainable fear of over packing....I think it stems from my first exchange where i was trudging around 35kgs of crap through eastern Europe. Mind you it was an awesome trip but I guess I dont wana carry extra stuff.

Here is my route via a nifty discovery a friend of mine made:

View Route in a larger map

I shall be in Leuven for 4weeks following a clinical placement in OBGYN. It should be interesting to see the difference in the way they work and practice medicine.

I also have plans to visit the other cities in Belgium when there, they all have something different to offer.

Brussels - the European heartbeat

Antwerp - Fashion capital for Belgium

Ghent - Music festivals

Bruges - Uber romantic city and the birth place of GODIVA chocolates

I cant wait!! this is TOTALLY GONNA ROCK! btw I will be posting when around....and keep an eye on my other blog for pure-visuals.

the rant

Warning rant:

I'm so fed up of exams. I cant wait for them all to be over, I am fed up of being in this house, going around the same rooms, I've re-designed them to death in my minds eye. I just wana go to the beach and feel the sand on my skin, have the sun warm me up, swim and enjoy that weightlessness feeling. I want to sit by the sea at night sipping a glass of wine while somewhere a guitar plays. I want to spend time just lazing around with friends near a pool or in an air-conditioned TV room watching a fun film with mounds of comfort food. I want to walk through Europe, to discover the worlds best Espresso in a hole in the wall, or the quaintest square filled with onlooking balconies blossoming with flowers. I want to stare out of a train and see the countryside of a new land spread out and unfold in front of me. I want to go to an all night party and dance my crazy little feet off till they cant take it any more. I want to jump all excited to my new summer song, and flirt with random strangers, I want to have an awesome tan, and fall to bed exhausted from days of fun randomness.

sigh....im now in my happy place...fantasizing bout these things. They will soon come! and I cant wait.

a sports one...

I have a question:

Now with the start of the worlds largest sporting event as defined by twitter, I happen to reside on the outside of this frenzy. I don't particularly find football that intriguing, although I did enjoy it when I watched a game with friends, but that was more due to the social aspect and wine I guess. I am not the most sportive of people, and sport appreciation is not high on my list. But observing all the word cup excitement I ask myself:

"What is it, that makes someone pick and side with a particular team?"

Now this issue is not as simple as what makes Yellow someone's favourite colour, because I am pretty sure that most people wouldn't stay barking at the TV due to the lack of consideration to the colour Yellow.

It seems a lot more passionate and emotive a topic than just favourites. It can be on the same level as Politics or Religion for some people. Some get into fights over it, torch each others houses etc.

So, do people pick a team depending on what team their father picked? And if so, where did it all start? In Malta there seems to be a very strong Italy vs England rivalry when it comes to football, some people parallel this to some sort of Political background.

But anyway, so if your father did not support any team because of lack of interest or whatever, or you just want to chose a team yourself, which team do you pick?

Do you pick the one with the best winning scores? The most entertaining games? The nicest uniforms? The closest to you geographically? The ones you can actually follow frequently? The ones with the raunchiest adverts?

Im still very confused about it all.

How did you pick your team?

it the end of an era

ok maybe the title is a little too dramatic, but I seem to be good at that. Today was the last day of Pathology examinations, and hopefully the last of it for good. This topic has plagued medical students for years! I remember one of our first lecturers said "pathology, I dont like teaching it and you wont like learning it" and I guess that can summarize what it has been for the past 4years of this course (we started mainly in 2nd year, but histology is a subsection of pathology really). All those hours attempting to remember the most useless receptors and gene mutations, all useless now...and as a personal guarantee I WILL FORGET THEM even if it means drowning them out with some other useless information, such as the difference between a rococo or a baroque piece of furniture, or the positive aspects of lead free paint!

No more shall we suffer under the most useless biochemistry questions or be baffled by vague hematology values!!!!

part of a series of clips I suggest you watch:

the fear.

so, I was watching this video today. (beware its 40mins long - but very interesting)

If you do not have the time to watch it here is the Cliff-notes version:
Basically Uganda wanted to pass this Anti-Homosexuality bill in parliament which would apart from making homosexuality illegal  (already is) would make it punishable by death. This was basically fueled after the visit of a preacher with a very strong anti-homosexuality view .

This is quite a horrific thought and prompted me to do some research. You can obviously imagine how much information there is on the web regarding history of homosexual expression from Europe, Africa, Americas and Asia. All depicting acts which we define as homosexual. But even though it seems that homosexuality has been around and recorded for thousands of years, it still seems to shock people. It was only recently, in 1973, that the American Psychiatric Association removed it from its manual, and therefore stopped diagnosing it as a mental disorder.

Here is a map of the world showing the current different attitudes towards homosexuality and the laws regarding it:
     No information
Homosexuality legal      Same-sex marriage      Other type of partnership (or unregistered cohabitation)      Foreign same-sex marriages recognized      No recognition of same-sex couples
Homosexuality illegal      Minimal penalty      Large penalty      Life in prison      Death penalty

Some extreme views such as that depicted in the video above show me that there is a lot of ignorance and fear in people who are not exposed to life in its entirety. If we leave out the religious aspect for a while and get back to it later, one can realize that it is all down to knowledge and exposure. I am pretty sure that most of the people that are anti-gay (or anti-blacks, anti-hispanics, anti-asian or basically anti-minority) have never actually known anyone belonging to that minority. Therefore they have never had a personal view into that persons world. It is very easy for the "white-man from an all white family in a white majority society, who sides with the major political party, enjoys only the top 40current styles, appears to do everything as everyone else" to judge and discriminate against anyone who is different to him. But with exposure to different sorts of people, one becomes more aware, that even though someone may have a different skin colour to yours, or vote for a different political party, or fall in love with the same sex as their own - they are people too. And upon getting to know them you no longer see their colour or their sexuality, but you see them as a person, a friend.

I personally know of people who have changed their attitudes towards people from minorities upon getting to know people in that minority, and this is a clear example of how prejudiced one would be. When I ask a racist person if they have ever known a black person, they say no. When I ask a homophobic person if they have ever known a gay person they say not to their knowledge. Which just goes to show that it is all based on this fear of the unknown. The fear of "it must be wrong because it is different". And as seen in the video people can easily become very emotionally attached to a belief and believe it is pure evil and do the whole "off-with-their-heads" thing...aka "the red queen syndrome" if you please.

The preacher in the video depicts coprophilia and he equates this with homosexual lovemaking. This is obviously not what the majority of gay sex is about, and definitely not what being gay is about. Coprophilia is a mental disorder which falls under the paraphilias umbrella. This is defined as: Fantasies, behaviors, or objects are paraphilic only when they lead to clinically significant distress or impairment (e.g. are obligatory, result in sexual dysfunction, require participation of nonconsenting individuals, lead to legal complications, interfere with social relationships). Also there is no statistical difference between the number of homosexual and heterosexual people that perform this act.

Therefore this preacher is giving bad information to a very impressionable audience, and instilling hate and discrimination. There was also talk that gay people preyed on younger children to "recruit" them into homosexuality, as if it was some elite underground club. It is known that pedophilia is another mental disorder under the paraphilias term already mentioned. And this is also not associated directly with homosexuality, and therefore another misconception.

Now getting back on the religious aspect of it all. Most of the comments passed on this video, or even on the Times of Malta, depicting anti-homosexual points of view have a religious tinge. Now regardless of which religion you choose to follow or not follow, it is a choice. Religion is not something one MUST do, it is a choice and hence there are thousands of religions (approx 4200), ranging from Taoism, to Christianity, to Islam, to The Church Of The Flying Spaghetti Monster. They all try to give some sort of meaning to life and to how we are meant to live. With guidance and inspiration, definitions of what is wrong and "sinful" and maybe even the presence of a god or not. But again, this is all a choice that one makes to believe in such. Therefore I cannot phantom as to how people point at others and scream out "sinner", "infidel" etc. to someone who doesn't even follow their own religion - what one applies to them selves does not apply to everyone else. This has always impressed me, obviously one is allowed their own opinion as dictated by democratic basic principles, but what I cannot understand is: How can one persons religious belief, be allowed to impede another persons human-right?

The Universal Decleration of Human Rights, as depicted by the UN on 10th December 1948, is a mere guideline for countries to follow, although has been incorporated and assimilated into a number of countries legislation. Obviously since it impinges on Islamic law, the have their own set of rights, however this does not guarantee freedom of religion or gender equality.

This just goes to show, we have so much more work that needs to be done, with regards to advocacy for the minorities and working towards social justice. We seem to find umpteen was to discriminate against one another [Ableism · Ageism · Caste

risk

risk. It is what we live our lives by. Every second of our life, we pass through situations which each have a risk value. Waking up in the morning; one can risk falling out of bed, risk waking up with  headache, risk stubbing your toe against that pesky door, risk slipping in the bathroom and cracking our head open, risk finding the toothpaste tube empty, risk that you burn your tongue with hot coffee, risk that you electrocute yourself when turning on the pc, risk of a paper-cut when studying....

obviously some of these risks are very low (thankfully) and some of them are very plausible. The thing about these risks is that generally one looks at the risk of negative outcomes. According to everyone's friend the Oxford Dictionary:

risk
  • noun 1 a situation involving exposure to danger. 2 the possibility that something unpleasant will happen. 3 a person or thing causing a risk or regarded in relation to risk: a fire risk.
  • verb 1 expose to danger or loss. 2 act in such a way as to incur the risk of. 3 incur risk by engaging in (an action).
  — PHRASES at one’s (own) risk taking responsibility for one’s own safety or possessions. run (or take) a risk (or risks) act in such a way as to expose oneself to danger.
  — ORIGIN Italian risco ‘danger’.
When considering the risks of every day life, it is quite scary really. Obviously if you had to think about the risks of it all you would drive yourself absolutely bonkers and never get out of bed (but you would have to move around to prevent bedsores etc.) While there are some people who live their life by calculating the risk:benefit  ratio if all that they do, there are others that play it all by ear. They work with a "try-it-out-and-see-how-it-goes" kinda thing. I think that a healthy balance of risk analysis in ones own life is quite important. You cant just walk through a 10-lane motorway and "hope for the best", as that probably wont happen. Again one doesn't need to spend an hour and a half worrying about what to wear on a regular night out because the probability is that only 2-5% of people actually take a long hard look at what you are wearing.

Some people quit their jobs and travel the world and others move to a new country in hopes of a new life. Others stick to the familiar, the well trod-on path. I find myself constantly inspired by people who take risks in life and manage to achieve what they set out to obtain, and sometimes even when a person does not achieve it, they still end up learning a lot of experiences and meeting some fantastic people along the way. Like this guy who travelled from pole to pole. Coming to think of it, without risk the world would be nowhere near where we are today. The USA would still be undiscovered to the Europeans,  world would still be flat, TV wouldn't exist- so forget computers and the internet. We would probably still be stuck living in caves and hunting wild cats and mice for dinner....

anyway I guess the point is; risk....will it empower you, or intimidate you. Dare to Live and Live to Dare. The life you deserve is out there, waiting for you.

BTW: There is a very interesting paper written by R. Wilson (a professor at the University of Harvard) called - Analyzing the Daily risks of Life (1979). It is quite interesting really and it relates to health issues in particular.
