a sports one...

I have a question:

Now with the start of the worlds largest sporting event as defined by twitter, I happen to reside on the outside of this frenzy. I don't particularly find football that intriguing, although I did enjoy it when I watched a game with friends, but that was more due to the social aspect and wine I guess. I am not the most sportive of people, and sport appreciation is not high on my list. But observing all the word cup excitement I ask myself:

"What is it, that makes someone pick and side with a particular team?"

Now this issue is not as simple as what makes Yellow someone's favourite colour, because I am pretty sure that most people wouldn't stay barking at the TV due to the lack of consideration to the colour Yellow.

It seems a lot more passionate and emotive a topic than just favourites. It can be on the same level as Politics or Religion for some people. Some get into fights over it, torch each others houses etc.

So, do people pick a team depending on what team their father picked? And if so, where did it all start? In Malta there seems to be a very strong Italy vs England rivalry when it comes to football, some people parallel this to some sort of Political background.

But anyway, so if your father did not support any team because of lack of interest or whatever, or you just want to chose a team yourself, which team do you pick?

Do you pick the one with the best winning scores? The most entertaining games? The nicest uniforms? The closest to you geographically? The ones you can actually follow frequently? The ones with the raunchiest adverts?

Im still very confused about it all.

How did you pick your team?
